Collection: Roof Mounted Bike Racks

Transport your bike safely, securely, and without compromising the ride quality when you get there. Roof-mounted bike racks from ERIK'S lift your bike above the vehicle and lock it in place for the drive, leaving your interior free and your hitch receiver available for a trailer or other gear. Roof racks work well for riders who want their bike out of the elements, prefer a cleaner look, or need to haul multiple bikes on a single vehicle without stacking them in a way that risks contact.

    Key Features to Look For

Roof mounting systems involve more variables than hitch or trunk racks. Getting the fit right across your vehicle, your crossbars, and your bike requires attention to a few important details.

    • Crossbar Compatibility  Most roof bike racks mount to crossbars running across the roof of your vehicle. Crossbars come in round, square, aero, and factory-specific profiles, and your rack needs to be compatible with the bars you have. Aftermarket crossbar systems from Thule and Yakima work with most roof rack-ready vehicles. Factory bars vary more and require specific adapters for some mounts.

    • Mounting Style  Fork-mount racks remove the front wheel and clamp the bike's fork to the rack, holding the bike very securely and at a lower overall height. Wheel-on or frame-mount racks hold the bike by the frame or front wheel without removing anything, which is faster but results in a taller load. Fork mounts are generally more stable at highway speeds.

    • Wheel Size Compatibility  Make sure the rack you choose accommodates your wheel size. Road bikes with 700c wheels, mountain bikes with 29-inch wheels, and fat bikes with four-inch-plus tires all require racks rated for those dimensions. Some racks handle a wide range of sizes with adjustable cradles. Others are optimized for specific wheel sizes.

    • Locking  A roof rack bike that is not locked is easy to steal at any stop. Look for racks that include locking skewers or straps and can be locked to the crossbars with a keyed lock. Many Thule and Yakima racks use a unified locking system across their product line, so you can lock multiple accessories with a single key.

    • Load Capacity  Your vehicle's roof has a load rating, and your crossbars have their own capacity as well. Make sure the total weight of your rack and bike stays within both limits. Heavier bikes like e-bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes require more attention to these ratings than lighter road bikes.

    • Height Clearance  A bike on a roof rack adds significant height to your vehicle. This is one of the most commonly overlooked issues with roof transport, and driving into a parking garage, car wash, or low overhead with a bike on the roof causes serious damage. Measure your total loaded height and know your clearances before every trip.
