To say the all-new Specialized Como electric bike is fun is like saying Mt. Everest is tall. Understatement.
The ride is so smooth you’ll feel like you're flying on wheels. From zero to 10, it's a 20 on the comfort scale.
If you take anything away from this blog, take away that the Como is fun and comfortable. It's a laid-back ride, with an upright riding position like a city bike. The Como is a confidence-inspiring ride that allows you to go with the flow, with full power. While the motor system still provides a powerful ride, the focus of the Como is comfort.
Ready to Haul
Sometimes you need to bring things to the party. Well, lucky you! The new Como rear rack has a max payload of 59.5 pounds, with lateral struts for side panniers. This means that you can bring a lot to the party. The rear rack is also approved for a child seat and can even tow a trailer.
Need to bring even more to the party? The bike is front rack compatible too.
It's probably time to start planning that party!
Upgraded Features
The riding position is comfortable and upright. Compared to the Specialized Vado, you’ll ride more upright on the Como. This helps you keep your eyes on the road in front of you.
The Como features a new alloy frame. This has the industry’s lowest entry (meaning step-thru height). No need to swing your leg over the top tube of this bike. Again, it is all about comfort.
To make the Como even more comfortable, the front suspension fork and suspension seat post (on 4.0 and 5.0 models) smooth out any bumps in whatever road or path you take.
All New Drive System & Battery
The new Specialized Como is powered by a new drive system (motor). No matter which model you choose, you’ll have the on-demand power you need.
With a max output of 90 Newton-meters (Nm) from the 2.2 motor system found on 5.0 models, 70Nm from the 2.0 motor on the 4.0, and 50Nm from the 2.0E on the 2.0 model, the new Como has a range of power options for any rider. In other words, the motor can deliver assistance with gentle but adequate power.
The new battery will keep you charged up all day. The 4.0 and 5.0 models have a 710 watt-hour (Wh) battery, and the 3.0 has a 530Wh battery. The range is up to 90 miles depending on the rider and conditions.
Time to charge the Como? Easily charge the battery on or off the bike with a new lockable quick-release mechanism.
IGH and Gate Drive System – Coming Soon!
The new Como comes in a traditional chain drive model or the integrated gear hub (IGH) model, which ERIK’S will offer soon. IGH does weigh more than the traditional chain and rear derailleur setup; the benefits are cleaner gearing (leading to less maintenance and more durability), stepless shifting, and better performance in the winter months. The 5.0 model has automatic shifting, which allows you to focus on the ride and not on the gears.
With the stepless IGH system, there are no true gears. Instead, as you move the shifter, it increases the gear inches smoothly with no indexed points in between, leading to much smoother shifting. The Como 3.0 and 4.0 have a manual twist shifter, with no click and no gear indicator. There is an icon that helps remind you to twist forward when going uphill and backward when going downhill. The TCD display will show you your approximate gearing.
The Como 5.0, with its automatic shifting, allows you to choose your preferred pedal cadence and will make the shifts as needed to keep you in that cadence. This is the perfect choice for riders who just want to ride and who love technology.
The Gates carbon belt never needs lubrication and can handle the elements (especially the winter elements) much better than a chain.
Tires to Take You Everywhere
Want to guess how we would describe the tires? Comfortable. (Surprise, surprise!)
The Como rolls on 650b x 2.3″ tires that have plenty of cushion while still giving you the confidence to ride whatever road or trail you have in mind. Paved paths, potholed streets, crushed limestone trails, and even gravel are no match for the new Specialized Como.
Easily Sync with the Mission Control App
The new Specialized Como is compatible with the Mission Control app. You can fully tune your motor output, view your riding metrics, and perform basic system diagnostics.
Most importantly, Mission Control lets you fight range anxiety by using the Smart Control feature. Simply tell Mission Control how far you want to go or how long you want to ride, and Smart Control will adjust your motor output so you get back with plenty of juice left in the tank!
Integrated Front and Rear Lights + RADAR
Comfort is also about feeling safe. The Como has integrated front and rear lights to illuminate the road in front of you and let those behind you know that you’re there.
In addition, the new Como comes with a Garmin Varia radar system hardwired to the rear rack. This light lets you know when cars are approaching from the rear.
Turbo System Lock
You can’t be comfortable if you're worried about your bike being stolen, right?
Enabled via the Mission Control app, the Turbo System Lock provides another layer of security to go along with your physical bike lock. The system lock disables the motor and activates the bike’s motion sensor. When triggered, it will sound an alarm and flash the lights until you disable it through the Mission Control app or enter a unique pin.
New Updated Display
With the sleek new computer nestled on the handlebars, you can easily display the information you want and need at a glance.
The Cadence Coach will help you stay in the perfect cadence zone to get all you can out of your bike as you pedal along. With an on-the-fly microtuner, you can also change your bike as you ride without accessing the app.
The new display is customizable through the Mission Control app as well.
