How to Put Ski Boots On (+Video)

Ski boots and socks

New to skiing? Let us walk you through the basics of how to put on your ski boots properly. Apply these simple tips and tricks and your feet will feel comfy and secure out on the slopes!

1. Start with dry socks.

To get into your ski boots, always start with dry socks and boot liners. Wet socks or liners not only lead to cold feet, but the moisture in the socks or liners can also add friction and make it harder to get into your boots. So, put on fresh, dry, warm ski socks just before getting into your boots and pull them up nice and high, checking for any wrinkles or folds that might lead to discomfort.

2. Make sure your boots are warm.

You should also always start with warm boots. The plastic will be more malleable, and it will make it easier to get into your boots if they are warm.

3. Move the buckles out of the way.

Open up all of the buckles and get them out of your way. If you have adjustable buckles, give them a twist. This helps to prevent them from grabbing onto the ladder when you don’t want them to.

4. Use the boot liner tongue as a pull tab.

Grab the pull tab on the top of the liner tongue. As you step into the boot, push down you’re your heel and pull up and over on the liner pull tab. This helps to open the boot up and let’s your foot drop right into place.

5. Bang your heel.

Once your foot is set, bang your heel on the ground a few times to get your heel set in the heel cup.

Get the shell properly situated and be sure that the liner is lined up properly.

6. Buckle up and go!

Loosely buckle the upper buckles and then stand up. Bend your knees a few times to get fully situated into the boots. Then, increase the tension on the upper buckles until you are at full tightness. You want the upper buckles to be quite snug without excess pressure points.

Now, loosely fasten the buckles over the top of your foot and toes. These buckles don’t need to be nearly as tight and over-tightening can cut off nerves and blood flow and lead to discomfort.

Finally, pull your snow pants over the boots and hit the slopes!
