Winter Cycling Bikes and Gear at Erik's Bike and Board Shop

Just because there is snow on the ground, this doesn't mean it's time to stop cycling! Granted it might seem daunting to ride through winter snow and ice, but you might want to try it before you dismiss the idea. Regardless of the weather, you will benefit from riding your bike more often. Winter bicycling gets your heart pumping, blood flowing and the calories burned off, plus, a little wind in the face is better than a cup of coffee to get your mind and body moving.

Winter Fat Bikes | Winter Commuting Bikes

Winter riding presents a few extra challenges that summer riding does not - snow, ice, slush. At Erik's Bike and Board Shop, we offer Fat Bikes, bicycles built to take on the deepest snow with amazing tires and Commuting Bikes, bicycles which can be outfitted to be more durable in the hard winter climate.

Winter Cycling Apparel

Besides your bicycle, an important aspect of cold-weather riding is your clothing and gear selection. The key rule is to not overdress. Remember, after you get moving, your body produces plenty of heat and sweat, so you can actually become too hot and sweaty. Wear just enough clothes to be slightly chilled before you start pedaling. First, select your baselayer for warmth and then move onto covering yourself with outerwear for wind protection: tights, jacket, jersey and don't forget your toes and hands! Erik's has a huge selection of commuting gear designed for the winter commuter. After you have your body covered, then move onto your head - we have winter helmets and coverings to keep you safe and warm.

Winter Cycling Gear

For winter cycling, investment in studded tires is a worthwhile investment - studded tires offer a solid traction on wet surfaces and they will get you through the snow and slush. Try running them at a lower pressure. The reduced pressure makes a bike tire squish out a little bit and gain better traction. When winter months roll in, daylight gets shorter and shorter. Best suggestion is to always be prepared to ride in the dark. Get bright bike lights for the front and back of your bike. Two things are critical: Ensure that the lights you have allow you to be seen and allow you to see the road! At Erik's, we offer a wide selection of studded and fat bike tires, plus we have an extensive selection of winter biking accessories to keep you seen and heard on the road.
